Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 pound bulk Italian sausage mild or hot
  • 1 yellow onion large, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 28 ounce
  • 1 can tomato sauce 15 ounce
  • 1 can diced tomatoes 14.5 ounce, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for heat
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 pound spaghetti broken in half
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley chopped, for garnish
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese for garnish

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or a large, deep pot over medium-high heat.
  • Add ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  • Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the pot with the browned meat. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (undrained), beef broth, water, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine.
  • Add dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Once boiling, add the broken spaghetti to the pot, submerging it as much as possible in the liquid. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the spaghetti is al dente and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
  • Serve hot, garnished with fresh chopped parsley and shredded Parmesan cheese.

Notes

For a spicier kick, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or use hot Italian sausage. If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes at the end. Feel free to add other vegetables like mushrooms or spinach during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
