Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting by beating together the softened butter and powdered sugar until well combined.
Add the milk and vanilla extract to the frosting and mix until smooth and creamy.
Once the cake is completely cool, spread the white frosting evenly on top. Decorate with cherry pie filling, placing cherries in the center or scattered evenly over the frosting.
Slice the cake and serve each piece on a red plate for a festive touch.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider adding almond extract to the frosting.
